From the table to the kitchen
Episode 1 starts at a family dinner. Kate tells her mother she trusts her husband enough to hand him a hall pass, because he would not act on it. The table laughs. Her mother, Margot, does not.
Minutes later Margot finds Dan alone in the kitchen and asks whether he heard that. She wonders if he would use the pass. He says no, fast, and she remarks that she has not heard a refusal that quick before. Kate calls out for coffee, and Dan answers from the doorway, while Margot calls him a saint and he corrects her: he is just married.
Margot names a time for the next evening, a book club that runs for three hours, and dares him to say no again. Episode 2 stays at premise level: the offer from the kitchen is now on the calendar.
